Woodwind Trio and String Quintet

Commissioned by the Carnegie Hall for the Simón Bolivar Symphony, 2012.

Music is the art of appreciating the sound, perfumery is the art of appreciating the aroma...

Looking for a way to compose a musical work based on perfumery, I found a specialized book where I learned that traditional perfumes consist of three sets of substances. The most volatile ones, which last for minutes (top notes), others that last all day and constitute the "theme" of the perfume (middle notes), and the base of the perfume that lingers for several days (base notes). I also learned that there is a modern trend that seeks to form a chord of four substances with similar volatility, an "aromatic chord" that can remain unchanged for hours.

When I opened a perfume book and found chords, themes, high, middle and low notes, I knew I was on the right track. So, I packed up books and notebooks and set off downtown in search of essential oils for my musical composition. I bought a bottle of everything my nose fell in love with, and organized them by origin: woods, herbs, flowers, fruits and seeds. Within each category I formed an aromatic chord:

WOODS

Cypress

Pine

Cedar

Ginger

HERBS
FLOWERS

Violet

Lilac

Lily

Rose

FRUITS
SEEDS

The vertical order of the substances was determined by observing their tenacity, that is, the length of time their aroma remains before dissipating. Those at the top are the most volatile, those at the bottom are the most tenacious. The five movements of the work correspond to these five aromatic chords.

To obtain notes and rhythms of these essential oils, I researched the chemical formula of the characteristic substances (limonene for lemon, for example).

The sense of smell works by recognizing the three-dimensional structure of the molecules; the geometric pattern of the atoms. So, with the chemical formulas, I plotted diagrams converting molecules to music, attributing the vertical axis to notes and the horizontal axis to rhythms. Finally, with these notes and these rhythms I composed the music, trying to make each movement adhere to the general impression that the aromatic chord invoked in me.

Woods: deep, Herbs: fresh, Flowers: affective, Citrus: acid, Seeds: bitter.

The title of the work comes from the combination of the words "Acoustic" and "Essence", which could be translated as: "Acoustic Essence".

Dedicated to Mayra Batalla, the love of my life.
