RADIOAXIAL

Symphonic Orchestra

Commissioned by the Cincinnati Symphony, USA, 2018.

Music can be described as the art of sonic patterns, while mathematics can be described as the science of numerical patterns. I have developed methods for counting and classifying musical patterns to thoroughly explore the possibilities of musical materials. Some of these patterns present very interesting symmetries that make them memorable, generating a wide range of affective possibilities.

In music, we find two types of symmetry. The first is called radial symmetry and occurs in scales that, when rotated on their radius, combine without completing a full revolution. The second is called axial symmetry and occurs in scales that have an axis that divides them into two identical halves.

Radioaxial was composed using radially and axially symmetrical chords and scales.
