ENRICO CHAPELA BARBA
COMPOSER
LA MENGAMBREA
Saxophone Quartet
La Mengambrea (1996, revised in 2002) for saxophone quartet, is a re-reading of an earlier work for string quartet that was also a rehash of some heavy metal songs. This series of reheated pieces has ended up becoming an authentic mengambrea, which includes elements that testify to the diverse transformations acquired during its passage through different styles, and that will be offered as a tribute to the never well weighted gastronomy of "focus". The aforementioned metal tracks were indeed heavy and energetic, but what they lacked in substance and vitality, they lacked in contrast and presentation.
This material of strong, raw and noisy flavor, when skipped with fine instrumental techniques and emptied into a background of counterpoint, settled into a three-beat string quartet in which the structure was fixed and the aroma refined. However, it was not convincing: the essence had been diluted a bit, it wanted to give it volume and a more aggressive color, so by changing the strings for saxophones and adding a pinch of dissonance to the harmony, it was ready to be served.
Recipes for both cooking and composing are a mere promise of delight that guarantees neither good music nor delicious dishes. It is through creative interpretation of the rules and their ability to adapt them to the circumstances that composers can appropriate and commit to the final flavor of their work, altering the recipe as much as their chef's palate dictates, for whom seasoning justifies any means.
Mengambrea is a term used to name the suspicious-looking (but great tasting) late-night taco that can be found under the glare of the solitary spotlights of Mexico City's sidewalk stalls for the sleepless.
