irracional

Chamber Orchestra

Work commissioned by the New Paths in Music Festival, New York.

An irrational number cannot be described as a fraction of a whole number dividing another and its decimal numbers extend infinitely without repeating patterns. Translated into musical values, this property implies an inexhaustible and unrepeatable source of material for composition.

The title Irracional not only refers to the use of the first sixty decimal places of π for the composition of this work, it also refers to the fact that music is not science. While it can be composed and described by numbers, it only makes sense if it excites. Just as irrational numbers cannot be described by a fraction of one integer over another, music cannot be fully explained by formulas.
