ENRICO CHAPELA BARBA
COMPOSER
irracional
Chamber Orchestra
Work commissioned by the New Paths in Music Festival, New York.
An irrational number cannot be described as a fraction of one integer dividing another, and its decimal digits extend infinitely without presenting repeated patterns. Translated into musical values, this property implies an inexhaustible and unrepeatable source of material for composition.
The title Irrational not only refers to the use of the first sixty decimals of $\pi$ for the composition of this work, but it also refers to the fact that music is not science. While it can be composed and described using numbers, it only makes sense if it is moving. Just as irrational numbers cannot be fully described by a fraction of one integer over another, music cannot be fully explained by formulas.
