ENRICO CHAPELA BARBA
COMPOSER
irracional
Chamber Orchestra
Work commissioned by the New Paths in Music Festival, New York.
An irrational number cannot be expressed as a fraction of one whole number divided by another, and its decimal representation extends infinitely without repeating patterns. Translated into musical values, this property implies an inexhaustible and unrepeatable source of material for composition.
The title Irracional not only refers to the use of the first sixty decimal places of π for the composition of this work; it also alludes to the fact that music is not science. While it can be composed and described using numbers, it only makes sense if it evokes emotion. Just as irrational numbers cannot be fully expressed as a fraction of one integer over another, music cannot be fully explained by formulas.
